Aloka's story

An Indian-bred pariah dog that was once found wandering the streets near the airport in Kolkata is now well-known all over the world for spreading the message of love, peace, and humanity. Aloka, who is four years old, is even more special because he has a natural mark on his forehead that looks like a heart. His story began in 2022, when a group of monks led by Bhikkhu Pannakara embarked on a 3,400-kilometer pilgrimage from Kolkata to Bodhgaya.  Aloka joined them six days into the journey. 

While other dogs only walked a short distance, Aloka walked the entire 112-day journey, keeping pace with the monks.  Bhikkhu Pannakara legally adopted him and brought him to the United States, impressed by his loyalty and bravery. After arriving in the United States, Aloka's journey continued.  He traveled approximately 3,700 kilometers across more than 10 states, from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., spreading the message of peace, love, and brotherhood among people. 

  He also traveled to Sri Lanka and Thailand.  Upon his recent return to India, he was given a grand welcome at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in Delhi, from where he is preparing for a new peace tour.  Maneka Gandhi, an animal rights activist and former Union Minister, stated that Aloka's story had the potential to alter people's perspectives and inspire them to recognize the loyalty, bravery, and love that are found in every street dog.

As stated previously, the dog biting cannot be cured here. Rabies-infected dog bites can be fatal if not vaccinated on time.  Because of this, these dogs require proper management. We should be cautious of aggressive dogs.  A complete rabies vaccine should be given after any dog bite.
