This fierce and magnificent sculpture depicts Narasimha, the half-man, half-lion avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu, in the moment He defeats Hiranyakashipu to protect His devotee Prahlada. Hiranyakashipu had received a boon that he could not be killed by man or animal, inside or outside, during day or night, on earth or in the sky.  So Bhagwan appeared as Narasimha, neither man nor animal. At twilight, at the threshold, He placed Hiranyakashipu on His lap and destroyed him with His claws.  Every condition of the boon was fulfilled, yet Dharma prevailed.  This remarkable stone sculpture stands at Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu Durbar Square, and dates to 1673, during the reign of King Pratap Malla. Its installation is documented by an inscription on its pedestal. In 1985, a Colombian girl named Omayra Sánchez was trapped in volcanic mud and submerged up to her waist.  Knowing that she wouldn't survive, rescuers did everything they could to comfort her.  After 60 hours in the mud, she tragically died.  The thought alone is chilling… a 13-year-old girl facing death for three days, and the world could only watch helplessly.  Omayra's story reminds us that some pain can only be felt, not explained.  People making jabs about how they could have saved her should really take five minutes to read this girl's story; she handled this with such poise and bravery.
