Astronomers weren't searching for a family of stars.
They were studying complex organic molecules inside the massive star-forming region NGC 6334-43, about 4,340 light-years from Earth, using observations from ALMA.
Instead, they
stumbled upon something extraordinary.
Hidden inside a
single filament of gas were nine young stars, all forming together from the
same cosmic nursery.
The filament
stretches nearly 24,700 astronomical units, with each neighboring star
separated by roughly 7,930 astronomical units.
Their motions reveal they are gravitationally bound—not a chance
alignment, but a true stellar family evolving together.
Even more remarkable,
the stars are at different stages of birth.
Some are already
launching powerful jets of gas, while others remain deeply embedded, still
quietly collapsing. It's a rare snapshot
of multiple stages of star formation happening side by side within the same
environment.
Massive stars usually
form so quickly that they erase the evidence of their own origins. But ALMA captured these stars before that
happened, preserving a remarkable record of how they are taking shape.
The study also
uncovered smaller groups within the family—a binary pair and a trio—suggesting
that multiple star-formation processes can occur simultaneously inside the same
gas filament.
Nine stars. One filament.
One unexpected discovery that offers a rare glimpse into how stellar
