KUKUR (Dog) Tihar Festival of Nepal

One of Nepal's most distinctive and beloved festivals is Kukur Tihar. It is celebrated on the second day of Tihar, the five-day Festival of Lights.  During this special day, dogs are honored and worshipped for their loyalty, friendship, and protection.

 Dogs are believed to be Yama, the god of death, messengers in Hindu mythology. Dogs are honored by being given delicious food and treats, having a red tika pinned to their foreheads, and being adorned with pretty flower garlands. Both pet dogs and stray dogs are honored equally.

 Kukur Tihar celebrates the strong bond between humans and dogs.  It recognizes the important roles dogs play as companions, guardians, rescuers, and loyal friends.  Many families also thank police and service dogs for their contributions to society.


This festival is famous around the world because it shows kindness and appreciation toward animals.  The celebration reflects Nepal's cultural values of gratitude, respect, and harmony with all living beings.
