Smartphones may explain up to half of America's birth-rate decline
Around 2007, American teenagers started spending less time dramatically together in person. There was less hanging out, less dating, and less of the ordinary proximity that defines adolescence. No one agreed on what had driven it.
American births started falling that same year and have not recovered since. Researchers have spent years testing whether childcare costs, housing prices, or economic anxiety explain the drop. None of them closes the gap.
A mysterious birth rate decline
Fertility in the United States has dropped by about a fifth since 2007. For decades, the number of babies per thousand women barely moved, and then it bent sharply down. The timing seemed self-explanatory, since the recession hit the same year and births dip when money is tight. But the economy recovered, and the rebound never arrived.
One widely cited
paper ruled out housing prices, childcare, and contraception.
Caitlin Myers, an economics professor at Middlebury College in Vermont, suspected something else had changed. She and Ezekiel Hooper, who was a student there at the time, looked for a cause big enough to change a national trend and timed it to 2007 at that time. Her answer was the iPhone.
An accidental
experiment
Proving a phone
changed anything is hard, since the people who rush to buy gadgets differ from
everyone else in many ways.
Myers and Hooper got
around that using a quirk in how the iPhone first reached buyers.
When Apple released
the iPhone in 2007, it ran exclusively on one network – AT&T – until
2011. Owning a working phone meant
living where AT&T’s signal reached, and that signal was patchy.
That patchiness gave
researchers a built-in comparison group.
Early smartphones were available in counties with full AT&T
coverage, whereas similar counties without it remained largely phone-free for
years. Myers and Hooper compared birth records from 2003 to 2011.
The numbers diverge
The gap was clear,
and it was widest among the youngest women.
In counties with early iPhone access, teen birth rates fell roughly five
to eight percent more than elsewhere, with women aged 20 to 24 close behind.
What made the finding new was not that births and phones moved together. Researchers had suspected that for years. No one had managed to isolate the iPhone’s effect from everything else happening after 2007 and put a number on it. Until now.
Added across every
age group, the total stood out. The
iPhone could account for a third to a half of the entire national decline in
births over those four years.
The pattern reached
beyond teens
The teen numbers
grabbed attention, but the pattern did not stop there. Declines showed up at every age in both
approaches the researchers used, reaching as far as women in their early
forties.
That broader reach
fits other work. A separate study of
American adults found sex grew less frequent across the whole 18 to 44 range
over these years, not only among teens.
Fewer encounters
across a generation surface in birth records.
At older ages, the
story flips. Births to women in their
thirties had been rising as couples waited longer.
According to the
analysis, rather than reversing that climb, the iPhone flattened it. Confirming

A correlation this
clean invites doubt, so the authors tried to break it. They reran everything on the coverage maps of
Verizon and Sprint – carriers that never sold the iPhone.
Those maps ought to
match if the drop was caused solely by coverage. During the iPhone's exclusive
window, coverage by Verizon and Sprint did not reveal any connection to
premature births. This is exactly what you would expect if the device itself –
not a generic cellular signal – drove the effect.
The pattern did not
apply to one result. Among Black women, the analysis found no decline at all, a
gap the authors openly acknowledge and cannot fully explain.
Why the birth rate
fell
The study measures
what happened to births, not why. Myers
and Hooper offer three explanations, all from earlier work. The first is simple: a lack of physical
encounters.
Phones pull people
onto screens, and the lost hours are often spent around others. Less in-person time likely means fewer
chances to make babies.
Better access to
contraception and simpler smartphone access to pornography are the other two
explanations. All three remain informed guesses. The trends move in the expected direction,
but the researchers cannot link those mechanisms to individual counties the way
they can with birth records.
What comes next
This work adds a
number where there was only a hunch. The
decline in American births is no longer a pure mystery; at least a third of the
early drop now has a named cause.
That changes how
governments might respond. Most
pronatalist policies, like cash bonuses and subsidized childcare, lower the
cost of raising a child.
Despite massive
expenditures by governments, birth rates continue to decline. Since 2006, South
Korea alone has committed hundreds of billions in funding.
If Myers and Hooper
are right, those policies target the wrong problem.
The decline, they
argue, is less about the cost of raising a child than whether the relationships
and sexual activity that lead to children are forming in the first place.
The study is
published as a working paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
