Taiwan is applauded by Western allies who are concerned about Chinese Coast Guard activities.

After the United States, Britain, France, and Germany raised concerns about the Chinese Coast Guard and other activities off the east coast of Taiwan, Taiwan expressed its gratitude, stating that freedom of navigation was essential to global trade. In what it called a "special maritime traffic law-enforcement operation," China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, sent Coast Guard ships into the waters off the east coast of the island earlier in June, putting Taipei in danger. 

China claimed that the operation was in response to Japan and the Philippines' announcement that they would begin formal talks on their maritime boundaries, which Beijing considered to involve Chinese waters off Taiwan. China has also been entering the same waters with maritime survey ships. Late on Wednesday, Taiwan's National Security Council secretary-general Joseph Wu wrote on X that he was "truly thankful" for the four countries' statements. "We all care about a rules-based international order, the Status Quo, and regional peace and stability.

 In reference to the People's Republic of China, he wrote, "The PRC should stop its maritime expansionism." The statements have not yet received a response from the Chinese foreign ministry. China considers the island and the waters surrounding it to be its own territory and acknowledges that Taiwan has not made any claims to sovereignty.

 Taiwan's Ocean Affairs Council, which oversees the island's Coast Guard, stated in a separate statement that maritime safety and freedom of navigation in the Taiwan Strait and the waters surrounding Taiwan are crucial to global trade. "China's maritime harassment of Taiwan and its subsequent political pressure not only violate international law, but they also harm the international community's shared interests." They must be promptly contained and collectively rejected," it added.

 Taiwan will continue to ​stand together with its friends and "responsibly and jointly defend the international order ​in surrounding waters ⁠through lawful, appropriate, and firm measures", the council said.


The council's minister, Kuan Bi-ling, stated on her Facebook page that China has been "certified" as a regional disruptor. "The international community backs Taiwan more and more as China harasses Taiwan!" She went on. On Taiwan's Yunlin coast guard ship, which was docked at the port, Kuan hosted Ruth Bradley-Jones, the de facto British ambassador to Taiwan. Taiwan says China has no right to ​claim any sovereignty or jurisdiction over the island or its waters.
