What if humanity were given a magnificent palace to live in, unlimited food and water were provided free of charge, no diseases were allowed, and no enemies or wars were allowed? We think that would be heaven.

But in 1972, a rigorous and historic experiment conducted on rats by American psychologist John B. Calhoun has shown that unlimited happiness and convenience are the main causes of the total destruction (apocalypse) of any society, this experiment is called Universe 25.

1. That artificial paradise for rats:

Scientist Calhoun created such a huge empire for rats, where 4 thousand rats could live comfortably. There was abundant nutritious food and clean water. There were luxurious rooms to live in. The temperature was always kept favorable. No one was allowed to get sick and there were no cats or enemies to kill them. Initially, 4 pairs (8) of healthy rats were left there.

2. Population explosion and collapse of society:

Initially the rats were very happy and rapidly produced offspring. In 560 days the number of rats reached 2200. But then there was such a strict and inhuman social behavior that scientists were shocked. The Beautiful Ones A new generation of rats was born, which did not know any of the strict social struggles for protection or the pain of finding food.

The male rats completely abandoned mating with the female rats and defending their territory. They spent the day only licking (cleaning) their bodies, eating and sleeping. They were called beautiful rats, but they were socially 'dead' from the inside. On the other hand, some rats became extremely violent for no reason and began to kill and eat rats of their own number. The female rats abandoned or killed their own babies.

That strict and mass extinction:

The amazing thing is that the population never went above 2200 in a place with a capacity of 4000. The rats completely stopped reproducing. After the 600th day of this harsh experiment in BC, the last surviving rat also died of old age. Despite all the facilities, the entire rat empire was reduced to nothing.

​A serious lesson for us:

Scientist Calhoun conducted this experiment as a stern warning for the future of humanity. When the purpose and struggle of life in a society ends, when the young generation is immersed only in luxury and cheap pleasures, then the mental death of society comes first and physical death comes later. Isn't today's modern and technological human society going the way of Universe 25?
