Scientists Have Identified 7 Potential Dyson Sphere Candidates in the Milky Way.

Astronomers have identified seven stars that could be candidates for partial Dyson spheres—hypothetical megastructures that an advanced civilization might build to capture a large fraction of a star’s energy.  While the discovery is intriguing, none of these objects has been confirmed to be artificial.

 The candidates were found after researchers analyzed nearly 5 million stars using data from the Gaia, 2MASS, and WISE sky surveys.  They searched for stars that appear normal in visible light but emit an unusual amount of mid-infrared radiation, a potential signature expected if energy were being collected and re-emitted as waste heat.

 All seven candidates are M-dwarf (red dwarf) stars.  Their infrared excess is difficult to explain with currently known astrophysical processes, making them worthy of further investigation.  However, scientists emphasize that natural explanations—such as dust, background galaxies, or other astronomical phenomena—remain the most likely possibilities.
