White noise, pup calls (natural mouse communication sounds), Mozart piano music (Sonata for Two Pianos, KV 448, frequency-adjusted for mice), or complete silence (intended as the negative control) were played to C57BL/6 lab mice that were kept in standard facility ambient noise. The team discovered that while the majority of novel stimuli (pup calls, Mozart, and silence) initially boosted cell proliferation after 24 hours, only the silence group exhibited sustained survival of these new cells after seven days. They used Brdu labeling to track newly dividing cells and NeuN labeling to confirm neuronal differentiation.
