As the Solar System orbits the center of the Milky Way, it periodically passes through the galaxy’s spiral arms, regions that contain a higher density of stars, gas, and dust than the spaces between them.
Some researchers have
suggested that these spiral arm crossings could slightly increase the risk of
catastrophic events on Earth. The
distant Oort Cloud may be disturbed by the stronger gravitational pull of
nearby stars and massive molecular clouds, causing additional long-period
comets to approach the inner Solar System. Spiral arms also contain more
massive stars, increasing the likelihood of nearby supernova explosions over
millions of years.
Some scientific studies have reported a possible correlation between spiral arm
crossings and periods of increased impact cratering or biodiversity changes on
Earth. However, more recent research
using updated models of the Milky Way has found that the timing of spiral arm crossings
does not consistently match Earth’s major mass extinction events. As a result, there is currently no scientific
consensus that spiral arm passages directly cause mass extinctions.
