Bimal Gurung's argument that Nepal should grant citizenship to Gorkhas

Bimal Gurung's argument is that the Nepali government should protect Indian Gorkhas' citizenship and identity if the Indian government does not grant them citizenship. Bimal Gurung is a prominent political figure in the Darjeeling region and the chairman of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. Nearly three years ago, on July 27, 2023 (Shrawan 11, 2080), he addressed a special program celebrating "Gorkhaland Martyrs' Day" in Darjeeling. 

In it, he expressed his strong resentment toward the central government in New Delhi. He said that now is the time for Nepal to consider the Gorkhas' future, stating that Indian Gorkhas have been treated like foreigners and stateless people in their own country despite having fought for India for years. Leader Gurung said in his speech that the Indian government keeps ignoring the Gorkhas' need for a permanent political solution and an identity.

 "If the Indian government cannot resolve the identity crisis of the Indian Gorkhas and continues to treat us like foreigners, then the Nepal government should seriously consider granting citizenship to us Gorkhas," he said, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the discriminatory behavior of the Indian ruling class. Since Nepal is where the Indian Gorkhas' historical and cultural roots are, analysts interpreted his statement to suggest that Nepal should lead in times of crisis. 

At the time, Leader Gurung's statement sparked significant political upheaval in Darjeeling and other Nepali-speaking parts of India. While others saw it as Nepal's role in preserving the Gorkha people's existence, others saw it as a strong warning to the Indian government and pressure to quickly fulfill the demand for a Gorkhaland state. In 2023, the issue of citizenship and identity for the Gorkhas, who have fought for a separate state for a long time, was brought up, and the discussion about how to solve it in the long run is still going on.
