Everything You’ve Ever Seen Makes Up Just 5% of the Universe.

Every star, planet, galaxy, nebula, and even every atom in your body belongs to just a tiny fraction of the Universe.  According to our best cosmological measurements, ordinary matter makes up only about 5% of the Universe’s total contents.

 The remaining 95% is invisible.  About 27% is dark matter, an unknown substance that doesn’t emit, absorb, or reflect light but reveals its presence through gravity.  It acts like an invisible framework, helping galaxies form and stay together.

 Dark energy makes up about 68% of the total. Unlike dark matter, dark energy appears to be driving the accelerating expansion of the Universe.  Despite its dominance over the universe, scientists are still unsure of its nature. These percentages come from decades of observations, including measurements of the cosmic microwave background, the large-scale distribution of galaxies, and distant exploding stars called Type Ia supernovae.  Together, they provide strong evidence that the visible Universe is only a small part of the whole.
