Hanuman, the son of the wind god, had already leapt across the ocean. Now he stood before Lanka, the golden city of Ravan, surrounded by golden walls, jewelled mansions, and moats filled with crocodiles. The city was impregnable even to the gods, so Hanuman shrank himself to the size of a cat and slipped in under cover of darkness. But Lankini, the guardian goddess of Lanka, blocked his path and warned him that no one entered her city without her permission.
Hanuman struck her with a single blow of his left fist. She thought back to a prophecy that Brahma, the god of creation, had given her long ago as Lankini began to shake and fall to the ground. The destruction of Lanka would begin the day a monkey defeated her. She stepped aside and let him pass. Hanuman entered the city, placing his left foot forward first, and the fall of Lanka had already begun.
