Is silence priceless?

   Is silence priceless? Is silence golden? 

The principal investigator conducted a landmark neurobiology study on the effects of auditory stimuli or their absence on adult hippocampal neurogenesis, which was published in Brain Structure and Function (online December 2013, print 2015, Volume 220, Issue 2) as a landmark study. Coworkers Tara L., Imke Kirste, Golo Kronenberg, Zeina Nicola, and C. 

In contrast to other auditory exposures, Walker, Robert Liu, and Gerd Kempermann of the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden and Duke University Medical School discovered that two hours of daily complete silence in mice triggered significant and long-lasting adult hippocampal neurogenesis. Adults were used in this carefully controlled experiment. 

White noise, pup calls (natural mouse communication sounds), Mozart piano music (Sonata for Two Pianos, KV 448, frequency-adjusted for mice), and complete silence (designed as the negative control) were played to C57BL/6 lab mice while they were kept in a standard facility with ambient noise.

 The team's findings indicate that while the majority of novel stimuli (pup calls, Mozart, and silence) initially led to an increase in cell proliferation after 24 hours, only the silence group was able to sustain the survival of these new cells after seven days. Neuronal differentiation was confirmed using the NeuN label, and newly dividing cells were tracked using the Brdu label.
