NASA Has Confirmed More Than 6,300 Worlds Beyond Our Solar
System.
Astronomers have now confirmed more than 6,300 exoplanets—planets that orbit stars beyond our Sun. These discoveries have transformed our understanding of the galaxy, revealing that planetary systems are incredibly common throughout the Milky Way.
Most of these worlds were discovered by space telescopes such as Kepler and TESS, along with powerful ground-based observatories. Scientists detect exoplanets using techniques like the transit method, which measures the tiny dip in a star’s brightness as a planet passes in front of it, and the radial velocity method, which detects the slight wobble of a star caused by an orbiting planet.
The planets that have
been found range from hot lava worlds and massive gas planets to icy
super-Earths and rocky worlds that may be in the habitable zones of their
stars. Numerous additional planets are still to be discovered, as thousands of
additional candidates await confirmation.
Why does this matter?
Every new exoplanet
helps scientists understand how planetary systems form, evolve, and whether
environments capable of supporting life might exist elsewhere in the universe.
