ONE OF THE BIGGEST STARS IN THE UNIVERSE IS ABOUT TO DIE

Around 160,000 light-years from Earth, an enormous red supergiant called WOH G64 is approaching the end of its life.

This star is so gigantic that if it replaced our Sun, it would stretch nearly to Jupiter's orbit, swallowing Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, and everything in between.

However, stars of this size do not live long. When their fuel runs out, gravity prevails because they burn through it so quickly. The core collapses in an instant...

Then comes a supernova, one of the universe's most powerful explosions that can briefly shine brighter than a galaxy. The incredible part is this: because WOH G64 is 160,000 light-years away, the explosion may already have happened.  Its light simply hasn't reached Earth yet.

 There's no danger to our planet.

When the light finally arrives, it will become one of the greatest astronomical events ever witnessed by humanity.

Astronomers have already observed vast shells of gas and dust surrounding WOH G64, a clear sign that the star is shedding its outer layers before its final collapse.

Somewhere in the cosmos, a stellar giant may already have taken its final breath...

 We're just waiting for its last brilliant light to reach us.
