Proxima Centauri
Proxima Centauri b is the nearest known exoplanet orbiting within a star’s habitable zone, located just over four light-years from Earth. But “habitable zone” does not mean “habitable planet.” It simply means temperatures could permit liquid water under the right atmospheric conditions—and that atmosphere has never been detected.
The planet is roughly
Earth-mass and circles Proxima Centauri every 11.2 days, only 0.048
astronomical units from the star. That
orbit would be scorching around the Sun, but Proxima is a much smaller, cooler
red dwarf, placing the planet within the region where surface water may be
possible.
The greater problem
is the star itself. Proxima Centauri
produces powerful flares, intense X-rays, extreme ultraviolet radiation and
harsh stellar winds. Models suggest an
unprotected Earth-like atmosphere could erode far more rapidly there than
anywhere in our Solar System, especially during the star’s violent youth.
Still, the planet may
not be completely airless. It could have
begun with enormous water reserves, developed a secondary atmosphere through
volcanic activity or retained protection from an unknown magnetic field.
That uncertainty
reaches far beyond one nearby world. Red
dwarfs are the most common stars in the galaxy, so discovering whether their
planets can preserve atmospheres may determine how common habitable
environments truly are.
Proxima b may have
the right temperature—but its atmosphere, if one remains, will decide
everything.
