Radiation is energy that travels through space or matter in the form of particles or electromagnetic waves.  It occurs naturally throughout the universe and is also produced by many human-made technologies.

Some of the most well-known types of radiation include:

Alpha radiation consists of heavy, positively charged particles.  It can be stopped by a sheet of paper or even the outer layer of human skin, but it can be harmful if radioactive material is inhaled or swallowed.

Beta radiation is made of fast-moving electrons or positrons.  It can travel farther than alpha particles and can penetrate paper, though it is usually blocked by materials like plastic or aluminum.

Gamma radiation is a very high-energy form of electromagnetic radiation.  It has no mass or electric charge and can pass through many materials, requiring thick lead or concrete for effective shielding.

Neutron radiation is made of free neutrons, typically released during nuclear reactions.  Because neutrons have no electric charge, they can penetrate deeply into materials and living tissue.

Electromagnetic radiation includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet light, X-rays, and gamma rays.  These forms differ only in wavelength and energy.

Cosmic radiation consists of extremely energetic particles that originate from the Sun, distant stars, exploding supernovae, and other powerful events in the universe.  The majority of this radiation is shielded from us by the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field. Radiation plays an essential role in science, medicine, astronomy, and technology.  While some forms are harmless or even beneficial, others can damage living cells if exposure is too high, making proper protection and understanding important.
