There Is a Planet With No Continents—Only a Global Ocean
Imagine a world where there are no continents, no islands, and no beaches—only a vast ocean covering the entire planet. Astronomers believe TOI-1452 b may be one of the best examples of such a "water world."
Located about 100 light-years from Earth in the constellation Draco, TOI-1452 b was discovered using NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and later studied with observations from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). With a mass that is nearly five times that of Earth and a radius that is approximately 1.67 times that of Earth, the planet is considered to be a super-Earth.
Its unusually low density compared with a
purely rocky planet suggests that a significant portion of its interior could
be made of water. Scientists estimate
that up to 30% of the planet's total mass may consist of water—far more than
Earth's, where water accounts for less than 0.1% of the planet's mass. If these models are correct, TOI-1452 b could
be covered by a global ocean hundreds of kilometers deep, with a rocky core
hidden beneath layers of high-pressure water and exotic forms of ice.
Astronomers have not
directly imaged the planet's surface, so they cannot yet confirm that it has
absolutely no land. However, its
measured size, mass, and density strongly support the possibility that it
belongs to a rare class of ocean-covered exoplanets.
The planet has become
a popular target for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which can detect molecules such as carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor in the planet's
atmosphere. These observations could reveal whether TOI-1452 b truly represents
an entirely new type of planetary environment and help scientists better
understand how water-rich worlds form beyond our Solar System.
If confirmed,
TOI-1452 b would be one of the most extraordinary exoplanets ever discovered—a
world where an endless ocean stretches across the entire planet with no visible
continents or coastlines.
