Why Do Cats Rub Against Your Legs?

Cats primarily rub against your legs for communication and marking purposes. Rubbing against you may serve as a sign of affection or a greeting; it is also a means of marking you as part of the cat’s territory or social group.  Scent glands on the cat's head and underside of its paws, as well as the base of its tail, are used to transfer the cat's own scent for this marking. This behavior is deeply rooted in the cat’s instincts.

 As a result, rubbing against your legs is a social act that helps you and your feline friend bond. To put it another way, your cat is strengthening its bond with you as a dependable companion by rubbing against you. Another reason cats rub against your legs is to get your attention.  Cats are naturally curious and observant creatures, and they often use physical contact to communicate their needs or desires. 

  Whether they want to be fed, to play, or simply to be petted, they might rub against your legs as a way of gaining your attention to that end.  Cats frequently accompany this behavior with vocalizations or gestures like meowing or purring, making it even more

difficult to ignore them.
