NASA has actually calculated this moment down to the second: at 2:16:07 a.m. PST on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, Voyager 1 will become the first human-made object ever to sit a full light day away from Earth, a distance of 16,094,799,096 miles.
A light day is simply
the distance light itself covers in 24 hours, roughly 25.9 billion
kilometers. That means once Voyager 1
crosses this threshold, a radio command sent from Earth will take a full day
just to reach the spacecraft, and if it responds immediately, the reply won't
arrive back on Earth until a full day after that. Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory
are already living inside that delay now; a command sent earlier this year to
shut down one of Voyager's remaining science instruments took roughly 23 hours
just to arrive.
Voyager 1 launched on September 5, 1977, flew past Jupiter in 1979 and Saturn in 1980, and has been coasting outward at a steady 38,000 miles per hour ever since, powered by nothing but the trajectory it locked into during that Saturn flyby. It already made history in 2012 by becoming the first spacecraft to cross beyond the heliosphere into interstellar space, though the Sun's gravitational influence actually reaches much farther than that boundary.
Reaching one light-day isn't about leaving the solar system in any dramatic sense; it's a pure measure
of scale and patience, humanity's most distant machine simply continuing to
answer when called, running on three onboard computers that share just 68
kilobytes of memory total, technology that now feels almost impossibly
primitive next to the distance it has carried this spacecraft.
Put another way, in
nearly 49 years of nonstop travel, Voyager 1 will have covered barely 0.0027
percent of the distance to Proxima Centauri, the nearest star beyond our own
Sun.
