NASA Is Designing a Telescope That Could Search the Skies for Signs of Alien Life.

 NASA is developing the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), a future space telescope designed specifically to search for potentially Earth-like planets around other stars and investigate whether their atmospheres show signs that could be associated with life. 

 🌍 HWO is planned to directly image roughly 25 potentially habitable worlds and use spectroscopy to study their atmospheres.  Scientists will look for gases such as oxygen, ozone, methane, and water vapor that could provide clues about a planet’s habitability or biological activity. 

 To distinguish the faint light reflected by an Earth-like planet from the overwhelming glare of its host star, the telescope is being designed with extremely high-contrast imaging technology. NASA describes HWO as the first space observatory specifically designed to search for signs of life on planets around other stars. 

 🚀 HWO is still a future mission concept—not a completed or launched telescope.  NASA is currently conducting technology development and precursor science to determine how such an ambitious observatory could be built.  Current studies envision a launch in the first half of the 2040s, assuming the necessary technology development and funding proceed successfully.
