Imagine repairing a damaged human heart with something inspired by a spinach leaf.  🌿❤

Scientists discovered that after removing the plant cells from spinach leaves, the tiny vein-like structure left behind can act as a natural scaffold.  Human heart cells placed on this structure were able to attach, survive, and even contract, while the leaf’s vascular network helped move fluids through the tissue.

 The breakthrough is still experimental, not yet a treatment for patients.  But it could help researchers solve one of the biggest challenges in tissue engineering: creating affordable, vascularized tissue that may one day support the repair of damaged organs.

 Sometimes, the future of medicine may come from places we least expect — even from a simple leaf on our plate.
