safety and potential tolerance limits.
A drug based on cannabis has been shown in a clinical trial to completely eliminate crippling PTSD nightmares. For millions with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), going to sleep means reliving terrifying traumas. Existing therapies like antidepressants offer limited relief for these chronic, debilitating nightmares.
However, a major Nature Medicine study recommends a cannabis-based remedy. Researchers at Germany's Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin tested Dronabinol, a prescription drug containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active compound in cannabis. THC targets the endocannabinoid system, which regulates sleep and emotional processing. Researchers believe that during intense REM dream phases, THC reduces dream activity, alleviating nighttime distress and allowing more peaceful sleep.

Over the course of ten weeks, 170 people with PTSD were the subjects of the double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The results were highly promising: over half of the participants responded to treatment, and more than a third reported their nightmares vanished entirely. On an eight-point nightmare scale, the Dronabinol group saw a 3.7-point reduction, compared to 2.2 points in the placebo group.
While the drug did not cure overall PTSD or depression, five out of six patients reported a marked improvement in general well-being. The side effects, which included headache and dizziness, were not severe, and there were no withdrawal symptoms. Future studies will assess the drug's long-term safety and potential tolerance limits.
