In 2015, during a routine examination of an Egyptian mummy of a woman in her fifties from the New Kingdom period (around 3,500 years ago), scientists noticed something unusual inside her right knee joint.
They discovered,
following advanced CT scans, a strange metallic object that was about 23
centimeters long, precisely inserted into the joint, and held in place by an
organic substance that looked like glue that had bonded with the bone and the
tissue around it. This suggested it was not an injury or post-mortem damage,
but a deliberate surgical intervention.
What stood out most
was the design, which appeared to stabilize the bones and distribute body
weight in a way strikingly similar to modern orthopedic techniques.
As a result, the
researchers requested a thorough evaluation from Dr. Head of orthopedic surgery
at Brigham Young University in the United States. Jackson was
surprised when he looked at the results and noted that the precision of the
metal fixation and the surrounding structure was comparable to that of some
cutting-edge modern surgical procedures. He even described the materials as
“intelligent,” capable of handling joint pressure and maintaining long-term
stability.
Interestingly, this
technique — known today as internal fixation with metal screws — did not appear
in Western medicine until 1741, introduced by French physician Nicolas André,
more than three thousand years after its supposed use in ancient Egypt.
In a press statement,
Jackson said:
“It seems Egyptology
still holds many secrets. We could have
saved centuries of orthopedic development research if we had discovered this a
century ago. This discovery significantly changed how we understand ancient
Egyptian medicine, suggesting a level of scientific and technological
advancement far beyond what was previously imagined.
