Microplastics and nanoplastics, which are even smaller forms of plastic, can be found in bottled water. Studies have detected these particles in bottled drinking water, although the amounts vary widely depending on the bottle, water source, packaging, and testing method.

 The assertion that "up to 90,000 more microplastic particles each year" are ingested by those who consume bottled water on a daily basis is not consistent across the population. A 2019 study estimated that people who drank only bottled water could ingest tens of thousands of additional microplastic particles per year compared with people who drank only tap water, but newer research using more sensitive testing methods has found much higher particle counts in some bottled waters.

 Scientists are still studying how much of these particles people absorb and what long-term health effects they may have.  Finding microplastics in drinking water does not automatically mean that drinking bottled water causes illness, and there is currently no established safe or harmful daily particle limit for humans.

 If you want to reduce exposure, using properly maintained reusable bottles with safe drinking water can reduce reliance on single-use plastic bottles.  Following local water-safety guidance is still the most important consideration when choosing between tap and bottled water.
