In 1985, a Colombian girl named Omayra Sánchez was trapped in volcanic mud and submerged up to her waist.

 Knowing that she wouldn't survive, rescuers did everything they could to comfort her.

 After 60 hours in the mud, she tragically died.

 The thought alone is chilling… a 13-year-old girl facing death for three days, and the world could only watch helplessly.

 Omayra's story reminds us that some pain can only be felt, not explained.

 People making jabs about how they could have saved her should really take five minutes to read this girl's story; she handled this with such poise and bravery.


There was no way to help her; it had nothing to do with infection or anything.  It was a perfect storm of things coming together that had her physically trapped under a heavy cement door that would have required a machine to move.

 In America, it might be easy to get something like that to an emergency room without a second thought.  Undoubtedly, this mudslide happened in a very poor area of an already poor country.


It happened in seconds, and she wasn't found at first; she was found (near?)  The second day she'd been trapped, and at that point the rising water made it impossible to bring in any machinery anyway without potentially hurting themselves or other survivors.  It seems cruel that these videos and photos exist, but they are some of the most well-known in the world because of her heart-wrenching story.  I've never been able to shake it, even though it's truly heart-wrenching, and trust me, I wish I could.


To imagine what she went through...  She had several nurses present and medical workers, but moving her was becoming more and more likely as the water continued to rise.  Eventually, on the third day, she said goodbye and gave in to the harsh elements.  Go read about it for a moment, and you'll understand why they couldn't just get her out.
