Why Do Cats Rub Against Your Legs?


The primary reasons cats rub against your legs are for communication and marking. Rubbing against you may serve as a sign of affection or a greeting; it is also a means of marking you as part of the cat’s territory or social group.   For this marking, the cat uses scent glands on its head, underside of its paws, and base of its tail to transfer its own scent. This behavior is deeply rooted in the cat’s instincts.

 As a result, rubbing against your legs is a social act that helps you and your feline friend bond.  To put it another way, your cat is strengthening its bond with you as a dependable companion by rubbing against you.  The desire to catch your attention is yet another reason cats rub against your legs. Cats are naturally curious and observant creatures, and they often use physical contact to communicate their needs or desires.

  Whether they want to be fed, to play, or simply to be petted, they might rub against your legs as a way of gaining your attention to that end.   Cats frequently accompany this behavior with vocalizations or gestures like meowing or purring, making it even more

 difficult to ignore them.
